Psalm 136 is one of the most repetitive Psalms in the Bible. Yet, it teaches us a great deal about both God's love for His people and how he forms us to be people who worship and rest in Him.
The repetition reveals that God's covenantal love is an unshakable love that God has for his people. We are reminded of this because the Psalmist works his way through God's creative acts, his saving power, and sustaining goodness. This can allow us to be formed by God's goodness and rest in Him.
Reflection questions:
Make a list this week of the ways God has been faithful to you.
How does this inform the goodness of his covenantal love for you?
Reflect on God's creative acts and saving mercies, why do you think the Psalmist and the church fathers thought it was so important to include these in catechizing God's people?
