The High Cost of Folly

We bought one of those inflatable pools for our backyard. It's not a little wading pool—it's big and a pain to clean out, but Julie and the kids love it.

One of the things that has surprised me about the pool is how quickly the water gets dirty. It almost feels like I look away, and there are bugs, and somehow, the water is brown, and I'm wrestling with it to replace the water.

The preacher used a similar analogy this past Sunday when he talked about how a dead fly ruins perfume. We know from experience that just a little soiling can ruin something much larger. As we examined the passage we saw how tenuous wisdom can be and that a bit of folly or win can sink a ship.

We should all take this warning seriously, but there's good news. As the Lord sanctifies us, we recognize how foul sin is and deepen our desire for fellowship with the Lord.

Reflection questions:

  1. Is there sin in your life you're making allowances for?

  2. List the costs of that sin.

  3. What does it mean for Christ to have given you a new heart?
